How to Beat the Heat on the Cheap

The mercury is climbing, and so are cooling costs. Here are a few ways you can keep your cool without cranking up the AC, and enjoy higher comfort and lower bills.

Check Your Pulse

Apply a towel soaked in cold water to your temples, ankles or wrists. These “pulse points” are where your blood is closest to the surface, and cooling them lowers your whole body’s temperature.

Hot Food, Cool Body

There’s a reason people in hot climates like Mexico and India enjoy spicy food. Eating dishes that pack a little heat helps you sweat, which cools you down without raising your body temperature.

Bed Down Temperatures

Put your pillowcase and sheets in freezer bags, and pop them in the freezer. When it’s time for bed, you’ll have the coolest crib in town.

Home-made AC

Freeze some water bottles and put them in front of a fan. You’ll get cool, misty air.

Eat Less, More

Eating smaller portions more often means your body doesn’t work as hard to digest your food. And that means you stay cooler and more comfortable.

Go Low

Heat rises, so spend more time tinkering in the basement or on the ground floor.

Turn Off

Turn off heat-generating appliances. That means eating salads and cold sandwiches so you don’t use the stove, turn off TVs and computers when they’re not in use—there are many ways to reduce heat. As a bonus, you’ll also reduce energy use.

These are some pretty cool ways to beat the heat. See how they work for you.
